[Ah, the fun of AUs.

DeDeDe just laughs, sounding quite amused.]

Aww, now don't be like that. I know you and I never saw eye to eye, but that's no reason to pretend you don't know me. Besides, I thought you had that whole 'protect the city' racket all figured out already.

[She doesn't know how to deal with AUs help.

There's a moment of silence on the other end of the line, as she tries really hard to place a name to this voice, but... nothing.]

No, truly, sir, I do not know what you are referring to. Perhaps you have me mistaken with someone else...?

Princess Zelda, unless I'm off my mark.

... No. You are quite on your mark.

[This is bizarre... Again, she's silent before there's the sound of some fiddling with the COMP]

Hold on-- [Blip! There is now the image of one Princess of Hyrule appearing on DeDeDe's device. She looks... decidedly lighter and softer than the one he might be familiar with.] Could I see you face, sir? Perhaps that might jog my memory.

[Decidedly so, yes. The Zelda he knows is a cold, calculating, and cunning politician who has long since abandoned her ideals and morals in the pursuit of power.]

Well, since you asked so nice, who am I to argue?

[After all, she was kind enough to reveal herself to him, and DeDeDe is a gentleman in his own way, so he's all too happy to do the same. After a few moments, the video flips on to reveal his penguin-faced countenance staring impassively back at her.]

Recognize me now?

[... A penguin man was not what she was expecting, to say the least. While she's certainly surprised, she tries to keep her emotions reigned in, shaking her head apologetically.

Calculating? Perhaps. Cunning? She wouldn't have survived seven years under Ganondorf's rule otherwise. But cold? Not in the slightest.]

... No. My apologies. I do not understand...

[DeDeDe's world is a bleak one, and even the most revered heroes have had to resort to some pretty bad things to survive.

He sighs a bit at her reaction, shaking his head for a moment before responding. A gloved hand comes up to scratch the side of his head.]

That makes two of us, little missy. Y'see, where I come from, you just got done declarin' yourself ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom after their princess got kidnapped. Prob'ly the turtle again. You mean to tell me you don't remember any of that? The fall of Hyrule? The cannibal's rampage? None of it?

[Her eyebrows raise at his description of "her" actions. Declaring herself the ruler of a foreign kingdom in the absence of the true heir to the throne? No... No, that sounds far too much like Ganondorf's doing for her to be comfortable.

"The fall of Hyrule" gets a bit of a frown, but otherwise... she shakes her head once more.]

Not at all, and I would never do such a thing...! I had just gotten back my own kingdom from an usurper before I was brought here.

I s'pose it was Ganondorf again, huh? How many times did you two pass that place back and forth before the bureaucrats ruined the whole thing for everyone, anyway?

... Just the once. I ensured it would not happen again.

[Still sounding perplexed over here.]

That's not what he's been runnin' around tellin' everyone. 'Course, I can understand the need to embellish things a bit every now and again. A man's got his pride, after all. Gotta say, though, I'm a little confused about how you don't remember any of this. You hit that pretty little head of yours or somethin'?

I mean, don't get me wrong, I like you much better this way - all prim and proper like - but you'll forgive me if I find it hard to believe that you just forgot all that. The Mushroom Kingdom, Dream Land, Angel Land... none of that ringin' a bell for you?

[A frown tugs at her lips at that "hit your head" comment, and once again, though this time more definitively, she shakes her head no.]

Ganondorf running around anywhere would be impossible, considering the Hero of Time, the Sages, and I sealed him away. And I can assure you that in no way did I concuss myself into believing such.

The only explanation I can think of, despite all reason saying otherwise, is that I am not the Princess Zelda you know.

And you should thank your lucky stars you're not, if that's really what's goin' on here. Things didn't go so well for Hyrule back home.

[He shakes his head for a moment before smiling back at her. His gaze is heavy with the horrors he's seen in his time.]

I'll tell ya this, though: if you're the same one, and that stuff just hasn't happened to you yet, do yourself a favor and keep Hyrule's currency just the way it is. Back home, greed destroyed Hyrule in a way Ganondorf never could, and a hell of a lot faster too.

[She doesn't smile back, too confused by his words. Trust is not something that comes easy to her, and his crudeness certainly doesn't help matters. ... But there's a strange, dirtied sense of honor about him, which makes her nod at his advice.]

... I see. Even under his reign, the rupee system still worked fine, so I see no reason to change it now. ... I will keep your words in mind for the future.

[Seemingly satisfied with that, he closes his eyes and heaves a sigh, shaking his head.]

...Sorry 'bout all that. This's all plenty odd for me too. Can't say I'm not grateful for the surprise one-up, but I wonder just what we're all here to do. I know from experience - protectin' the city means a lot of different things, dependin' on who you talk to.
