[Really, local media? Really?]

Why would anyone write something like that? Who cares about that kind of thing, anyway? Shouldn't the media be focusing on something more important? Something that actually matters?

... and are there really people out there looking at my-- watching me run?

Haven't you ever read any magazines back home? They have a lot of things like that.

But you should take it as a compliment.

There's nothing like that in any of the magazines I read!

Health and fitness magazines.

I guess those wouldn't have a lot of gossip in them. But tabloids, magazines about celebrities, fashion magazines, even music magazines will all have gossip and opinions like that written up in them.

It's a different kind of journalism.

And people actually find that kind of thing entertaining?

Yes. Haven't you ever listened to things people talk about in the hallways at school? Some of them really like stuff like this.

I was always trying my hardest to ignore them, they never seemed to be talking about anything important.

Really? I learned a lot of useful things that way. You'd be surprised what sorts of things people will tell you when you just listen.

But they weren't talking to me. It would be eavesdropping.

It's not eavesdropping. It's being observant.

Are you sure? Most people don't like others listening in on their conversations.

I'm not talking about deliberately eavesdropping on private conversations. I'm talking about not tuning out what's going on around you. People say a lot of things walking past in the hallway or on the way to school or on a train. And you don't always have to be an active participant to be a part of a conversation.

Maybe I'll try keeping an ear out sometime, then. But if I hear anything personal, I'm going to keep walking.
