Society is a large machine. Every member is just a small part of the machine; a gear. Their duty is to fulfill their role as that gear. If that person decides to stop doing their duty of being a gear, where else in the machine will they fit?
It's true we all have our own roles in society, but that doesn't mean that's all there is to us! If there were, none of us would have a heart or a soul. We wouldn't feel anything but the need to work.
