01 - [Video]

[There's a scrambling sound and a few mutterings of "you turn on the video over here, don't you?" before the video finally turns out, showing the somewhat morose face of one (1) Sam Erstwhile, disheveled brown hair almost covering his eyes. He glances away with a slight frown.]

Um, right, what was I going to say here...

[And then a nod as he looks back up.]

Right! Right. Erm, yeah. Hello to all of you, I guess. I'm Sam and...I just arrived a few days ago, so I'm sorry if I'm still new to all of this.

[He tries his best at a smile, but it's kind of a pathetic try, at best- his mouth just quirks upward for one second before dropping down to it's usual position.]

I...I just am a little confused, honestly. I mean, people have told me about the Persona thing and the fact that we have to fight monsters and all, but, I mean, why were we chosen in the first place? I know plenty of other people who would be way better at this than me. And it's not like I applied or anything, so...what's so special about me?

[He sighs, scratching the back of his head.] Somebody I talked to before talked about how they choose us based on our souls, but...I just want to hear what other people think. I'm not really interested in why we were chosen, more like how we were chosen, if that makes sense. What sets us apart from all the other people from where we come from?

Because, I dunno...I think they made a really huge mistake when they chose me.

I think we were chosen based on willpower.

Ah, you're new here then? I hope you're finding yourself settled, this place can take some getting used to.

[He seems to ponder Sam's question for a moment, stroking his chin.] As for how we were chosen... Honestly, I can't say. Whomever it was that drew us here- I'm assuming that strange man with the butterfly mask that appeared to you before you came to in this world- didn't seem to have any particular agenda in mind...

If I had to guess, I'd say he was drawn to rather strong entities with amazing power, whether it's the ability to use Personas effectively or it's the raw talent an individual already possesses before arrival. [At least that seemed to be the case with at least three angels wandering the city, among other strange and powerful people.]

I wouldn't worry about it, kiddo. You'll just drive yourself nuts thinking it over.

For all we know, they put some names on a board and threw darts at them.

[A pause as he looks her over, before what can only be described as a "snrrrk" comes out of him.]

Wait, willpower? Like, as in that one thing I don't really have...?

[But then his faces falls into a confused expression.]

Oh, wait. You're being serious, aren't you.

...

Well, if that's true, then I'm definitely the worst mistake they've ever made.

Yeah, yeah, I'm new...

[He gives a nod at that description.] Yeah, I remember him! But no, he didn't have any reason why he chose me at all. He just...appeared. I don't know.

[And an even more troubled expression appears on his face at that last part.] Amazing power? [A scoff.] Now that, I definitely don't have...I'm just a nobody, really.

I don't see why anyone would have need of me at all.

That's really not a good way of choosing people to help out if they chose them for a purpose, really...

[He shrugs.] I mean, if they chose people that way, then they'd better be prepared for the worst team they ever will have. Just saying.

Weren't you listening when you got here or what? Butterfly Man said it took a strong will to remember our names in wherever the hell we were.

Beside, I'm a weapon of mass goddamn destruction. Why else would they have picked me to save anything if I didn't have an unshakable will?

Not...really. Mostly I was thinking about the whole, "there's something called a Persona and I have no idea where the heck I am, what is going on" part of it. Sorry. But still...I don't know who judged my will or what, but it's definitely not at all strong.

[A sigh.]

See, that's what I'm talking about. I've met gods and big huge knights of terror and now living weapons of mass destruction, and then there's me. Like...how do I even stand up to all of you all? What's so special about me?

Hmm... it's possible your talent to use Personas will be extraordinary, but I can't say for sure. This is all an educated guess, after all. It could be entirely random.

Or perhaps you're not giving yourself enough credit, Sam. [He gives Sam a grin.]

My name is Aziraphale, by the way.

[He shrugs.] Sometimes gods are petty.

Hey, maybe I'm not cutting them enough slack and there's more to it then that, don't know. I sure hope so if they actually hope for anything to come of this.

But, like I said, it's not worth dwelling on, you'll just end up chasing your own tail.

You think so? I mean, yeah, I'm thinking it's more random, but would they take such a big risk in the first place?

[And there's a slight twist of his mouth to the side in that attempt of a smile.] I don't see why I should need credit, but alright.

[The name is interesting, though.] Aziraphale? That sounds really cool...where do you come from, Aziraphale?

I haven't met any gods where I'm from, so I guess I'll have to take your word on that. I mean, maybe they just work in ways we can't understand.

[And a groan at that last part.] I know it isn't, but still! It's going to be bothering me for a while, because it just makes no sense to me. And I like things making sense.

Well, before arriving here I lived in Soho, in London. [As is probably apparent by his very British accent.] I owned a bookshop there. What about you, Sam?

Oh, London? Wow, I've never been there, but that's far away from where I live.

[He shrugs.] Well, Earth, really. More specifically, America. Don't really live in one place right now, I'm more all over the place...like a wanderer, really? I don't really like staying in one place at all.

[He places a certain emphasis on that last sentence, a hardness in his tone, because he means that. That's the honest truth.]

I wasn't special until the end of the world. Maybe something here'll make you special, I dunno. Heck, you got a Persona, that's a start.

Hm... I'm afraid you're in for a bit of disappointment, it doesn't appear possible to leave this city yet, let alone the world we're currently in. The best thing to do is to get settled by any means.

For many this means taking up a job. I'm currently one of the librarians at the university's library in the Aquarius district.

Don't believe that bullcrap; gods are no more mysterious than anyone else in what they do, when it comes down to it, they just want you to think they are.

[Wow, loosen up, kid.] You need to learn to just roll with things. Sometimes, things don't make sense, it's just how it goes.

Wait, what, end of the world? Your world ended?

[WHOAH LADY THAT IS SOME SERIOUS STUFF RIGHT THERE]

God! That's-I can't even imagine what I'd do in a situation like that...

[And a sniff.] Well, yeah, that's a start if I could actually, you know, figure out how to use it.

Yeah, so I've heard...

[Not good news at all, nope. Though the job thing makes him think a little, before answering:]

Oh, are you? I used to have a job before I came here. I guess this means I'm fired now, heh...but what sorts of jobs d they have around the city?

What, really? You know? [And he sounds confused.] Waiiit. Does this mean you know some gods, or are you just saying stuff to make me feel better?

[A pause before he says, with some misery:]

Oh, I know that. I'd just like them to make sense for once in my life, but I guess that's not going to happen anytime soon in my life.

Yes, my world ended. In fact, all world ends eventually. In my world an asshole got a hold of the big red button and boom.

If you're anything like me, you'd lay dying until a greater entity would decide to mess with you for fun.

As for using your Persona, usually, it first comes out when you're afraid or threatened. Just. Don't go out at night alone to kickstart it, you might be eaten.

Oh, gosh. That's...bad.

And so, you died- er, dying-, but I guess that last part means you were brought here while you were doing that? Aren't you glad to be alive, though?

[And a pause as he takes that info in.] Afraid or threatened, got it. And...in the night is when all the monsters come out, don't they?

Actually, amazingly enough, there is life after the end of the world. Of course, because there has to be a catch, the post-end world is populated with demons who all want to eat you. So yes, I am glad to be still alive, and here is... relatively peaceful, so there's that.

The monsters come out at night, but mostly during the extra hour at midnight. That's when it's most dangerous. During the full moon, too, but that's a classic.

...Demons, huh? So, I guess that means Hell won out, eventually, whee you come from. Not that I believe in the existence of that, but hey, coming here, a lot of things have been proven wrong.

Extra hour? How can there be an extra hour, doesn't that break a lot of rules about time or whatever? And yeah, the full moon, that is a classic, heh. Not to surprised about that one.
