We've seen some splendid duels over the last few days, although all of them were using the power unique to this world. Are any of you duelists of other varieties?

I'm particularly interested in magicians - human or otherwise - from other worlds, being a magician who dabbles in dueling myself. However, I'm interested in hearing about what form such things take even in worlds where magic is less common.

Did I tell you what I do back home? I know I told you I was in the military, but I don't remember if I got more specific.

Oh. Right. Well, I'm a pilot of...

[He trails off, realizing that she probably doesn't know what a mobile suit is.]

You know what a robot is, right? I pilot one that's almost 20 meters tall.

And you do... what, exactly, with the robot?

[second_destiny]

I fight. It's got weapons and it's as quick as a fighter jet. It can even fly in the atmosphere.

That makes sense, considering that you introduced yourself as a soldier. It sounds quite impressive, though; my magic would be no match.

You can't summon up anything close to that size, I guess, huh?

My biggest doll is about four times my height.

[second_destiny]

Oh. So then it's about a third the Gundam's height.

Of course, size isn't everything.

[second_destiny]

I'm not gonna argue that. I learned that lesson almost too well back home.

Is there a story behind that learning?

The Battle of Nortrum. The enemy had a ship way bigger than anything our fleet had, but our side still crippled it.

Such technology is common in your world, then.

That's right. Both the Federation and Vagan use more mobile suits than any other kind of weapon.

It could also be a purely academic interest.

Goodness, are we writing papers now? I'm afraid I wouldn't give my life story for free, however. I'm a witch of no little talent myself, you know!

That's too bad. I doubt I'm willing to pay much to hear it.

Oh my, you're missing out. It's quite a heart-wrenching tale of tragedy and freedom! But never mind. Are you having much luck, pray tell?

Why, yes. Extraordinary amounts of magicians are knocking on my door just to tell me about themselves.

Ah, yes, because you're SUCH a social butterfly. You must be the most popular kid in town.

And I'm sure that 'ho ho ho' of yours nets you plenty of friends yourself.

I don't need friends. All I need is myself.

Superstitious people call people like me magicians, sometimes, but I'm more of a sword fighter. As far as duels go, the usual weapons are fists, vibroblades, or lightsabers where I come from.

I've never been a fan of fighting for sport, but as far as training goes, dueling's very useful.

Isn't fighting for sport preferable to fighting for survival?

I think not fighting at all is preferable to either. Since that's impossible, though, you might as well be prepared to do so if you have the ability.

I think a good duel is a fine intellectual challenge.

Well, as long as it's friendly, I have no problem with it.

I don't hear of many duels nowadays. Then again, as a general, I have more forces to command than that.

At the same time, though, a battle between armies could be considered a duel of generals. Or it could, at least, in a case like yours, where the soldiers aren't alive.

I also command living soldiers, at home.

That's somewhat different, then.

I'm not really a magician, though I have some demons who manipulate magic.
