[Text] 1st Flame

[Zioryle has arrived to the city a little while ago, and had some nice citizen help him out with the COMP network, but other than that, seemed to get too scared to answer about the city's condition. Here's a newcomer being unsure of the place.]

Sorry if this sounds rude, but what's up with the city looking so broken? I know enough that I'm not in my home world, but opening my eyes to see broken buildings around town isn't what I call a good morning call as far as I know.

Ah, you're new? You must have missed the attack.

An attack? So you guys have an enemy. Figures, the citizen I talked to was so scared they couldn't answer when I asked.

Some places look like an aftermath of a war zone. Should I say I'm lucky I didn't come any sooner?

I suppose so... Forgive me for saying so, but you seem kinda unfazed by all this. You're not worried?

[Of course, this is text, so it's a little harder to pick up on tone.]

I guess you can say I only look I'm taking things fine because I resorted to writing out my responses. Plus it's no use if I'm screaming my head off to get answers, right?

The place I came from had a similar feeling as here, so I guess there's that too... Just not as bad as here.

... The city could use more rational people.

A similar feeling? Y-you mean broken, or with weird things happening on a semi-regular basis?

You make it sound like the other "visitors" are complete morons.

The latter actually, although I was recently told it's more broken than I thought just before ending up here.

[Stupidity is like a vacuum. There may only be a few central points of idiocy, but they demolish everything in their paths, leaving nothing but the lingering feeling of loss and, well, stupidity.

I wouldn't say I'm used to it in the sense that I'll jump in and help out without a second thought, but thanks. If I came before whatever caused this wreck, I'd have said I would like this place better than my home world, actually.

Ah, you don't have to jump in immediately. Most people don't. Maybe when things are back to normal...

[Huh, that doesn't sound like a familiar name.]

Just Zioryle? [Otonashi, you should probably give your name too.]

[He kind of feels embarrassed of this. If Otonashi hadn't said that, Zio would have probably unconsciously started to act like his more impulsive friend.]

That's true.

And yeah, just Zioryle. Is it that weird?

[He hasn't thought much of it before, names were the least of their concerns back in his home world, when people were more paranoid of spirits and demons.]

No, just curious. Right, I should give a fair warning -- be careful if you stay out late. The city gets overrun with creatures.

It, uh, sounds weird. I know.

Creatures, huh? They sound nice enough that they only show up during a certain time.

Well you'll have to deal with my "weird" name then. It's you humans who get so focused on naming everything.

[Someone sounds a little hurt their name was called "weird."]

[He blinks, confused. Why the strong reaction? Oh, did he really--]

No, I didn't mean you! I-I meant it was weird that monsters systematically appear every night!

[Way to misunderstand, Zio. He hit himself for such a stupid reaction and it takes a while for him to respond.]

Yeah, that's weird.

...We were recently attacked, so if you've only just arrived, you probably weren't here to see it.

Attacked? By who? I wasn't able to get a clear answer from someone who apparently lives in this place.

We aren't entirely sure who started it, but... The attack itself consisted of various demons who up until now have been living in or under the city.

Demons, huh.

[He just leaves it at that, but he's letting what Otonashi told him earlier in the post finally sink into his head.]

Yes. Hinoto-Ri is populated by many demons, some of whom are integrated into society here alongside humans. But there are just as many who are dangerous to humans, and those are the ones that all suddenly attacked that day.

I see. Sounds difficult to distinguish which ones won't pose a threat and which ones will.

I heard the dangerous ones show up during certain hour of the night. Is it really safe to say it's just that time, with how you guys were attacked outside of that time period?

The ones that would come out in the day could sometimes cause trouble, but they weren't usually so aggressive when it comes to humans.

It's just that it has been like this for so long, it is hard for me to imagine that this wasn't an exception to the normal way of things.

Normal, huh. [Zio thinks over what would be "normal" at this point, but he decides not to voice it in writing.]

Sounds like something triggered the demons to attack out of the "normal practice."

That's definitely how it seems. But there's no way for us to know for sure what it was...

No way to know, huh? Whoever's behind it sounds real crafty to be able to pull off a big-scale attack, from what I can see.

What a time for me to get dragged into a different world.

I'm sorry. It's an awful burden to put on unsuspecting people, but I'm afraid there isn't much else we can do...

Why are you apologizing?

We'll just have to make the most out of what we have, right? If I'm brought here because I'm needed, then I'll make myself useful.

[There's a small pause before she replies again.]

Thank you. The people here will appreciate it a lot, I'm sure.

No need for thanks. I think that's the least I can do.

Even though I'm not sure how useful I can be with my powers, though. Fire's not exactly something everyone would like.

You have fire powers?

Yes, I do. It's like breathing air for me, so I had to be careful of using it back at home, where people don't really acknowledge the existence of demons.

So you're a demon?

I see. Luckily, the case is much different here. The people are not only used to seeing demons, but also all sorts of strange people from different worlds.

As far as Visitors go, I don't think anyone will find you too odd.

[It's meant to be reassuring. Even if it was only instance, she knows what it's like to feel like an outsider because of her powers - much less having to put up with that your whole life...]

In a way, yes. It's a little hard to explain.

Good to hear that. I feel like I'd fit in here better than back at home.

It's definitely a relief, not having to hide such things.

Now that you mention it, that's true. It feels pretty refreshing to be myself.

[And this realization makes him feel a bit embarrassed to admit, because all the effort he put into acting like a "normal human being" just feels so silly now.]

For however long you're here, I hope you can make yourself comfortable.

[Although with some of the things that happen here, it could be difficult at times...]

Since you have your COMP working already, I assume you already know about your room?

Yeah. I haven't taken a look at it yet, since it looks like I'm at the opposite side of the city.

Have you been in this world long?

It's been about a year at this point.

That seems like a long time.

Have you gotten homesick?

At times, yes.

Have you tried getting back home during then? Or have you been stuck here for all that time?

I haven't looked for any ways out. To be honest... If I can, I'd like to help the people in this world.

I see. In a way, I guess that's good to hear. Well, in the sense that there's like-minded people. Not that you haven't found a way back yet.

I'm sure that once we are able to help the people here, we will be able to return to our homes if we wish. We just have to stay focused until then.
