Maybe the initiation of it is on purpose, but the execution of each stage is random? Like some sort of machine you want to use, but can't control, so it just spits things out arbitrarily?
On the one hand, I'm not sure we're all prepared for rampant paranoia, but it'd make identifying a pattern a lot more difficult if the symptoms completely changed...
