Something like that; but it's an imprecise method of introducing someone to a hobby. Their interests aren't foolproof, either. Just because you like trains doesn't mean you'll enjoy building them. The problem with hobbies are that they're things people don't often talk about doing and enjoying. If you ask someone what they like, they might say music, which would make you think they'd enjoy playing an instrument, even though what they really enjoy is something like nonfiction writing.

You'll really have to dig to get that information out of them.
