Because they needed to understand the world around them, and without the secular truths that science has lately introduced to us they needed to know why the sun rose and fell, why people died, and why the world was constantly changing. They created gods to fill in the gaps in their own knowledge.

And in so doing, they mistook primal forces, corrupt forces, for divinity, forever dancing with damnation and sorcery.
