i grew up on a planet called Dantooine. guess it's far too remote for people to have heard of if they never had business out there.

Dantooine is located in the Outer Rim, which is about 3/4 of the spiral arms of the galaxy or so. the other 1/4 or so of that outer circle is the Unknown Regions and Wild Space, and i assume i am in one of those now. if this planet isn't part of the Republic, you probably wouldn't know any of this.

If by "this planet" you mean Earth then yes it is not part of a Republic though there are many smaller republics within.

I do not come from such a republic I come from the United States of America which refers to its system of government as a democracy.

But it is basically the same thing as a republic.

There is a line of mobile phone technology referred to as "Droid" or "Android" however that is not a sentient species.

Unless you are referring to robots then yes there are robots, but not many, and I doubt any but one are sentient.
