It's like... you're just using them to replace your friend. I don't think that's fair - to either of them.

Instead, wouldn't it be better to be more honest and simply say you'd like to meet new people? If it doesn't work out, there won't be any obligation to keep meeting with them even if you get along very well, but I think you could still find plenty of friendly people in the process.
