2nd Pokeball - A Completely Ridiculous Inquiry

When the feed snaps on, it reveals Kotoha, sitting calmly in a chair. She fiddles with the bow at the back of her neck for a few seconds before launching into a spiel.

"Hi, my name's Kotoha, and I have a question."

There's slight hint of urgency in her voice, and her blue eyes are intense as she leans forward slightly to ask her question.

"Why is everyone so pretty?"

...wait what.

"Is it, like, a requirement? 'You must be this sexy to save the world'? I mean, I know I'm pretty, but I've met people here that rank right up there with Elesa, and she's a supermodel."

She leans back and drums her heels against the floor.

"It's not fair! How am I supposed to get anything done when I'm constantly distracted like this?!"

She bounces to her feet at that and starts pacing, letting out a little growl of frustration.

"Urrrrr! Stupid teenage hormones!"

Gale is torn. He knows the basics of reproduction. He knows that younger subjects, but not too young, are more fertile and that in nature reproducing quickly is a means to ensure the survival of your genes. But in this world it seems that people Kotoha's age are not done with their studies yet. In his worlds, if any teenager existed, they'd be sent to war like everyone else. Doesn't raising children takes a lot of time and energy? It seems incompatible in both cases.

"... I do not comprehend."

"Don't be so down on yourself! If you're here, you must be qualified, right?"

A shrug.

"It does seem kind of skeevy, doesn't it? Of course, I'm not really suggesting it seriously, I just really needed to get it off my chest."

Kotoha grins.

"I wouldn't expect people to speak for anyone but themselves, anyway! Also, yeah, it definitely doesn't hurt in your case."

Kotoha just raises one eyebrow at that.

"Wow, that's...kind of tacky, actually."

A melodramatic sigh.

"You've dashed all my hopes, you know! I was hoping you were the kind of elegant sybarite that lounges around on silk sheets making mysterious and dreamy statements! I could have gotten a job wearing a sheer dress and feeding you grapes. But alas! You're just a normal girl that doesn't wear pajamas."

She's grinning as she says this.

"You probably made the right choice crushing my dreams, frankly - I am lousy at hand-feeding people; you'd choke within a week."

Okay yeah this is...Kotoha doesn't even know, really.

"Well, break down what, exactly, you don't understand and I'll try to explain it to you, okay?"

"You do not appear ready to reproduce, I suppose is my main point."

Shura shrugs, then snickers.

"What can I say? In the end I'm just a girl raised by demons at a key period of my life."

Okay yeah Kotoha is just really weirded out right now.

Kotoha places one hand in front of her heart and does a little bow over it.

"Meanwhile, I'm a girl who stumbled into acting in genre films at a key period of my life."

Grin and a shrug.

"Some of it sticks with you!"

"I see. I do not comprehend why your hormones would be in such a rut, then."

"...okay wow you have issues."

Kotoha sighs before launching into a spiel.

"Okay then! First up: I am, in fact, fully physically capable of...reproducing, as you so charmingly put it. However, it is in fact a recent development, and I probably won't be able to do it safely for another ten years. Okay? You got me so far?"

Gale nods. "Yes."

"So this is something modern societies have, by and large, figured out. So in most places, there's a generally accepted age where you're considered to be old enough to make your own choices vis-a-vis reproduction. Still with me?"

Instead of waiting for a response, she continues speaking.

"Okay good. So there's one: the actual age where your body wants to start with the reproduction, and two: the age where society says you can start with reproduction. These do not generally match up."

She spreads her arms wide at this.

"So you end up with cases like me: normal teenagers, their bodies a bubbling chemical cauldron of all sorts of hormones, and in no particular position to do anything about it. Thus endeth the lesson!"

Gale is silent for a while. Only the movement of his hand as he processes this information betrays that he has not actually blue screen'd.

"I do not... it seems like a cruel biological process."

"The main thing that makes it bearable is knowing that literally everyone you will ever meet went through the same thing!"

Pause.

"...there are occasional exceptions, but let's not get into that right now."
