The background book is a bit of a harder read, but if you think you're up for it, then go ahead. The prequel book was written first, but the setting book came after. You shouldn't have any problem understanding things without either, but there's never anything wrong with reading good books.

I'd say it will be fine as long as you are honest with them, but I'm aware that there are some subject that aren't easy to talk about.
